Early Life and Education

Konstantin Borisovich Ass was born on December 24, 1896, in Nosivka, Russian Empire. He graduated from the Riga Gymnasium in 1914 and enrolled in the mechanical engineering department of the Petrograd Polytechnic Institute.

World War I

In 1916, Ass volunteered for military service in the Baltic Fleet's 1st Aviation Unit. He attended theoretical aviation courses at Petrograd Polytechnic Institute and flight training at the Officer's School of Naval Aviation. In May 1917, he was promoted to Ensign. After graduating, he served with the 2nd Aviation Brigade in Finland.

Civil War

Ass did not support the Bolshevik Revolution and joined the White Army. From 1919, he served as a pilot with the Northern Army of the All-Russian Government. He fought on the Eastern Front and earned the rank of Sub-Lieutenant. In recognition of his bravery, he was awarded the Order of Saint Anna, 3rd Degree.

After the defeat of Kolchak's army, Ass settled in Nizhneudinsk and worked in the department of education. However, he was arrested for his White Army service and sentenced to a labor camp. In 1921, his sentence was reduced to three years.

Great Patriotic War

Information about Ass's life between the Civil War and World War II is scarce. In 1941, he volunteered for service in the Red Army. Despite his age, he was assigned as a clerk-quartermaster sergeant due to his literacy. He fought with the 7th Company of the 123rd Guards Rifle Regiment.
