Grizzly Mauling Survivor Corey Chubon
On September 13th, 2018, Corey Chubon, a Florida resident, and his companion, 37-year-old Mark Uptain, embarked on a hunting expedition in Wyoming's pristine Teton Park.
The Attack
As the hunters found their prey, two grizzly bears charged at them. One bear grabbed Chubon and flung him from his horse. After being airlifted to the hospital, Chubon sustained injuries to his leg, arm, and chest. He informed investigators that only one of the grizzlies had shown aggression.
The Shooting
Chubon claims that while lying on the ground, he retrieved his pistol and pointed it at the bear, but it "swiped" the weapon from his grasp. The bear then shifted its focus to Uptain and dragged him into the forest. Chubon states that he picked up his pistol again, but was unable to fire and tossed it towards Uptain.
Escape and Discovery
Chubon escaped on horseback and rode to higher ground to establish cell service. He contacted emergency responders, and a helicopter rescued him two hours later. The two grizzly bears responsible for Uptain's death were trapped and euthanized on September 16th, 2018.
Mark Uptain: A Life Remembered
Mark Uptain was a father of five, owned a small business, and guided hunting expeditions with Martin Outfitters. He was an avid outdoors enthusiast and enjoyed horseback riding, hunting, fishing, biking, and playing chess.
GoFundMe Campaign
A GoFundMe page was established by friend Raul Perry to support Uptain's family. The campaign has raised approximately $25,000 of its $50,000 goal. The funds aim to alleviate financial concerns for Uptain's wife, Sarah, and their children.
