A Senior Citizen's Path to Empowerment Through Weightlifting
Discovering the Power of WeightliftingAt the age of 74, Elizabeth Lewar, a resilient woman from Wales, continues to defy the limitations of age. Her journey into weightlifting began as a coping mechanism for the emotional turmoil caused by her husband's health issues.

A Pivotal Turning Point
Approaching her 60th birthday, Elizabeth faced a series of challenges that took an emotional toll. As she cared for her terminally ill husband, Nicholas, she realized the need for a diversion. "I joined a gym, thinking an hour with people who were exercising, who were thinking, who were functioning, would do me good," she recalled.

Emotional Relief and Physical Strength
Weightlifting provided Elizabeth with an unexpected outlet for her emotions. During her very first session, she shed tears, a rarity for her. As she pushed herself physically, she found solace from the pain she was enduring. "I would go through a year of classes and talk to the 30 or so people of all shapes and sizes who were there, mainly women but a few good men. And I found that I was not alone in wanting to tone my biceps, or burn a few hundred calories."

Overcoming Health Challenges
Elizabeth's relentless care for her husband took its toll on her own health. She experienced persistent colds, debilitating fatigue, and severe back pain. "I felt constantly as though I was coming down with something, in summer or winter. I developed a limp and was wrongly diagnosed with untreatable osteoporosis. I suffered from backache and woke at night with cramp," she shared.

Embracing Positivity and a New Routine
Nicholas's passing in 2004 marked a pivotal moment in Elizabeth's life. She channeled her grief into her weightlifting routine, focusing on strengthening her arms. "Four kilos on the handle in each hand was a nice weight for me to manage — quite heavy at my age," she said.
The Power of Adrenaline and Endorphins
Elizabeth attributes her physical and mental well-being to the physiological benefits of weightlifting. "I have no doubt that there is a physiological explanation for this: the unblocking of arteries, the rushing of blood to the brain so that endorphins are released, the increased chemical levels," she explained.
A Sanctuary for Seniors
Elizabeth recognizes the importance of community and camaraderie, especially for seniors. "I still feel the need for companionship, the feeling of belonging to a group, for support in times of stress. Weightlifting is particularly valuable for us oldies. I for one, hope to delay my need for a piece of kit on wheels indefinitely. You can call me an optimist, but I am serious about keeping my zimmer frame pushed deep into the furthest cupboard."
Tips for Seniors Embracing Weightlifting
Nadia Fairweather, a personal trainer, emphasizes the importance of proper technique to avoid injuries. "Weightlifting can put strain on your lower back. Always lift with a straight back and bend your knees. For beginners, I would recommend starting with a session with a personal trainer to learn the correct technique."
Conclusion
Elizabeth Lewar serves as an inspiration for seniors seeking to live active, fulfilling lives. Through her journey with weightlifting, she has found not only physical strength but also emotional support and a sense of purpose. Her story is a testament to the transformative power of embracing new challenges, no matter our age.
