Christi Loyall's Amputated Leg Takes on Instagram
Discovering a Rare CancerChristi Loyall's life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with epithelioid sarcoma in 2016. After countless doctor's appointments and a nagging sense that something was amiss, she received the life-altering news. It began with a numb big toe in 2011, which gradually spread up her right leg over the next three years. The pain became "excruciating," affecting her quality of life and leading to a misdiagnosis of vitamin B-12 deficiency. In 2015, a lump on the inside of her right leg raised alarms. "My surgeon said, 'This has got a one in 100,000 chance of being cancer,'" she recalled. Tragically, after months of medical appointments, scans, and tests, she received the devastating diagnosis.
A New Journey
On April 22, 2016, Christi's leg was amputated above the knee to prevent the cancer from spreading. Determined to stay positive, she saw an opportunity to create humor out of her adversity. "A friend of my cousin mentioned that I should start an Instagram for my leg," she said. "I thought it was the most brilliant idea ever. There were so many weird accounts out there, but no one had a human leg that they were posting about."
One Foot Wander
Christi's amputated limb, affectionately nicknamed "Achy" by her friends, became the subject of a unique and irreverent Instagram account called "One Foot Wander." With her signature humor, she started sharing "ridiculously weird" photographs of her skeletal foot in various scenarios.
Achy's Adventures
From interacting with pets and children to skateboarding, exploring abandoned railroads, lounging on the beach, and posing in international locations, Achy's adventures know no bounds. "I think the weirdest picture I have is of my newborn nephew holding it," Christi said. "My favorite picture is probably of my dog, Kaiser. He's this big, adorable, blue-eyed baby. I also like taking it to abandoned places. I love urban exploring."
A Social Media Sensation
With over 4800 followers, One Foot Wander has become a source of inspiration and laughter for amputees and non-amputees alike. Christi's unique perspective and unwavering sense of humor remind us that life's challenges can be met with creativity, resilience, and a little bit of silliness.
