Louis Alibaud: A Foiled Assassin
Early LifeLouis Alibaud, a notorious French criminal, was born on May 2, 1810, near Nîmes. As a young man of eighteen, he joined an infantry regiment as a private and rose to the rank of corporal.
Military Dismissal and Career Change
After being demoted for a fight in Strasbourg, Alibaud voluntarily retired from the military in 1834 and pursued a career in the telegraph service in Carcassonne. He later resided in Perpignan and Barcelona before returning to Paris with a sinister plan.
The Assassination Attempt on King Louis-Philippe
Driven by a desire for revenge over the brutal suppression of a rebellion in 1832, Alibaud decided to assassinate King Louis-Philippe. On June 26, 1836, as the king rode through the Tuileries Gate and acknowledged the saluting National Guard, Alibaud fired his rifle from point-blank range. The bullet narrowly missed the king, leaving him unscathed.
Capture and Execution
Alibaud was immediately apprehended and arrested. On July 11, 1836, following a trial by the Chamber of Peers, he was sentenced to death by beheading and executed in Paris.
