Abdumalik Abdullajanov: Tajikistani Politician
Early Life and EducationAbdumalik Abdullajanov was born on January 1, 1949, in Khujand, Tajikistan. He descended from an influential aristocratic lineage. His grandfather, Professor Abdulrahman ibn ash-shaykh Muhammad Sultan al-Maasumi, was a renowned scholar-theologian who fled to Saudi Arabia in 1922 and served as an advisor to King Abdul Aziz.
Career in Government
Abdullajanov graduated from the Odessa Technological Institute in 1971 with a degree in engineering. He began his career at the Kairakkum Flour Mill, eventually becoming its director. In 1980, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Procurements of the Tajik SSR. He rose through the ranks, becoming First Deputy Minister in 1986 and Minister of Bread Products in 1987.
Prime Ministership
On September 21, 1992, Abdullajanov was appointed Acting Prime Minister of Tajikistan. He became the official Prime Minister on November 20, 1992. However, he resigned in 1993 due to disagreements with President Emomali Rahmon.
Opposition and Exile
From 1993 to 1994, Abdullajanov served as Tajikistan's ambassador to Russia. In 1994, he ran unsuccessfully in the presidential elections. In 1996, he founded the National Unity political bloc and later became the leader of the northern opposition Movement for National Revival.
Living in exile since the mid-1990s, Abdullajanov is believed to have organized the failed attempted uprising in Khujand in 1998.
