Ugandan Statesman and Prime Minister

Professor Edward Sennyonga was a prominent Ugandan statesman and the Prime Minister of Uganda from 1985 to 1986. He also held the portfolio of Minister of Finance during his tenure.

Early Life and Education

Born in Uganda, Professor Sennyonga pursued a degree in electrical engineering in South Africa and the United Kingdom. Upon completing his studies in 1955, he became the first chartered electrical engineer in East and Central Africa.

Engineering Career

After gaining professional experience in various electricity companies in the UK, Professor Sennyonga returned to Uganda in 1957 and served as the Chief Engineer of the Electricity Department. In 1969, he established his own engineering firm.

Academic and Industry Contributions

Professor Sennyonga played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Institution of Engineers of Uganda and the development of engineering education in the country. He also served as the General Manager of Uganda Airlines, the national carrier.

Political Career

Before his premiership, Professor Sennyonga held the positions of Minister of Housing and Urban Development and Minister of Finance in the Ugandan government. As Prime Minister, he faced significant economic and political challenges, including high inflation and political instability.

Legacy

Professor Sennyonga's contributions to engineering, academia, and public service continue to be remembered in Uganda. His pioneering work in the field of electrical engineering laid the foundation for the development of the country's electricity sector, while his involvement in education and politics helped shape the nation's trajectory.
