Adalbert, Margrave of Austria
Adalbert of Austria (c. 1018-1055) was a member of the Babenberg dynasty.
Heir to Austria
As the son of Margrave Leopold I, Adalbert inherited the Margraviate of Austria after the death of his older brother, Henry I.
Wars with Hungary
Adalbert's reign was largely characterized by continuous warfare with neighboring Hungary. Initially, he expanded the margraviate's territory eastward to the Leitha River, reaching the borders of present-day Lower Austria. However, this area was lost following Emperor Conrad II's failed invasion of Hungary. Notably, Vienna was first mentioned in this period as a border fortress captured by the Hungarians.
The Peace of 1043
In a subsequent war, Adalbert regained the territories up to the Leitha River under the Peace of 1043. This led to the creation of the separate state of the New March, which served as a buffer zone between Austria and Hungary. The New March was later reunited with Austria in 1063.
