Early Life and Education
Adjoa Andoh was born on January 14, 1963, in Clifton, a suburb of Bristol, England. Her mother was an English teacher, while her father was a Ghanaian journalist and musician. Andoh grew up in the village of Wickwar, Gloucestershire, and attended Lady Katherine Berkeley's School, founded in 1384. She initially studied law at the University of Bristol for two years before pursuing a career in the arts.
Career
TheaterAndoh is a highly acclaimed stage actress. Notable performances include "The Vagina Monologues," "Richard II" at the Globe Theatre, and "A Streetcar Named Desire" at the National Theatre Studio.
Film and Television
Andoh made her screen debut in the early 1990s with roles in the soap opera "EastEnders" and the feature film "London South West." She has appeared in numerous television series, including "Law & Order: UK" (three seasons), "Doctor Who" (two seasons), and "Spooks" (three seasons).
Her Hollywood debut came with Clint Eastwood's 2009 drama "Invictus," where she played Brenda Mazibuko, the Chief of Staff to Nelson Mandela. The film received two Oscar nominations and three Golden Globe nominations.
In 2019, Andoh starred in the thriller "Fractured," directed by Brad Anderson. She also appeared in the long-running crime drama "Silent Witness" in 2020 and the historical romance series "Bridgerton" in 2021, where she played Lady Danbury.
Personal Life
Andoh is married to teacher Howard Cunnell, and they have three children. She received a Reader's license (lay preacher) in the Church of England in 2009. Andoh is an avid photographer and often shares photos of her beloved black Labrador, Pooch, on social media.
