Adriaan de Groot: Dutch Chess Master and Psychologist
Adriaan de Groot (1914-2006) was a groundbreaking Dutch chess player and psychologist who made significant contributions to the field of chess research.
Pioneering Research on Chess Thinking
In 1946, de Groot completed his doctoral dissertation entitled "Thinking of the Chess Player" (Het denken van den schaker). This seminal work, translated into English in 1965 as "Thought and Choice in Chess," laid the foundation for research on chess thinking.
De Groot's research revealed that chess players' thinking process consists of four distinct stages:
- Orientation:Initial perception of the board position
- Survey:Rapid evaluation of possible moves- Investigation:Systematic analysis of promising variations
- Proof:Verification of the best move
The Stages of Chess Thinking
1. Orientation
During orientation, players quickly identify the relevant features of the position, such as threats, weaknesses, and opportunities.
2. Survey
In the survey stage, players consider a wide range of potential moves without fully analyzing them. They rely on heuristics and experience to narrow down their options.
3. Investigation
The investigation stage involves a deep and systematic examination of selected variations. Players calculate move sequences and assess the resulting positions.
4. Proof
In the final stage, players verify the soundness of their chosen move by examining all potential refutations or countermeasures.
