Biography of Adriana Caselotti

Adriana Caselotti was an American actress and singer, best known as the voice of Snow White in Walt Disney's classic animated film "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs".

Family Background

Adriana was born to Guido Caselotti, an Italian immigrant who taught music and singing, and Maria Caselotti, an Italian opera singer who also gave singing lessons. Her older sister, Louise, followed in their parents' footsteps by giving singing lessons and working in the opera.

Career

By the mid-1930s, Adriana had already worked for a while in the MGM choir. In 1935, she was hired by Walt Disney for the lead role in his full-length animated film, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". However, after the film was released, Disney blacklisted her, not wanting her voice to be heard elsewhere. Adriana received only $970 for her work on the film. Comedian Jack Benny tried to get permission from Disney to use Adriana's voice but was unsuccessful.

Despite being blacklisted, Adriana managed to play another role, providing the voice of Juliet in the film "The Wizard of Oz". She also made appearances in TV shows such as "The Julie Andrews Hour" and "The Mike Douglas Show". In the early 1990s, she re-recorded the song "I'm Wishing" for the renovation of the Snow White Grotto attraction at Disneyland.

Personal Life

Adriana was married four times. Her first marriage to Robert Chard ended in divorce. She then married actor Norval Mitchell in 1952, but he retired after their wedding. After Norval's death in 1972, Adriana married Dr. Dana Costigan. Following her second widowhood, she married Florian St. Pierre, but this marriage also ended in divorce.

Death

Adriana Caselotti passed away on January 19, 1997, in her own home, due to respiratory failure caused by lung cancer.
