Afonso Van-Dúnem "Mbinda"
Early Life and Political CareerAfonso Van-Dúnem "Mbinda" was a prominent Angolan diplomat and statesman who played a significant role in the country's history. In 1961, he joined the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), a nationalist organization fighting for Angola's independence.
MPLA Leadership
In 1976, Van-Dúnem became a member of the MPLA's Central Committee. He gradually rose through the ranks, becoming a member of the Political Bureau in 1985. During this period, he held various positions, including Provincial Commissioner of Luanda (1976-1978) and Secretary of the MPLA's Central Committee (1978-1985).
Minister of Foreign Affairs
In 1985, Van-Dúnem was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Republic of Angola. In this capacity, he led negotiations that resulted in the withdrawal of Cuban troops from Angola. He served in this role until 1989.
Diplomatic Career
After his term as Foreign Minister, Van-Dúnem served as Angola's Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 1991 to 2000. He continued to play an active role in international affairs, becoming the MPLA's Secretary for International Relations in 2010.
