Early Career as Aghasi Agaguluoglu in Turkey
Aghasi Agaguluogluwas born in Azerbaijan in 1980. He began his boxing career in Turkey, where he represented the Turkish national team and competed under the name Aghasi Agaguluoglu. In 2000, at the age of 20, Aghasi won the European Championship for Turkey, defeating the five-time Russian champion, two-time European champion, and two-time world champion Ramaz Paliani in the final.
Global Success and Return to Azerbaijan
In 2001, Aghasi made a breakthrough at the World Championships, reaching the final but ultimately losing to Guillermo Rigondeaux, who would later become a two-time Olympic champion. After the World Championships, Aghasi returned to his native Azerbaijan and reclaimed his original surname, Mahammadov. In 2003, he represented Azerbaijan at the World Championships in Bangkok, where he encountered Rigondeaux again in the quarter-finals. This time, Mahammadov emerged victorious, going on to capture Azerbaijan's first-ever gold medal in the history of boxing by defeating Gennady Golovkin in the final.
Olympic Achievement and Tragedy
In 2004, Mahammadov competed in the Athens Olympics for Azerbaijan and secured a bronze medal. However, in the same year, he was involved in a severe car accident. He suffered a serious traumatic brain injury and was hospitalized for an extended period. Upon returning to boxing, Mahammadov was unable to regain his previous form and even failed to win the Azerbaijani championship.
