Agilmund: The First Historical King of the Lombards

Agilmund emerged as the first historically documented king of the Lombards during the late 4th to early 5th centuries. His reign is described in the 7th-century work "The Origin of the Lombard People" (Chapter 2) and in the 8th-century text "Historia Langobardorum" by Paul the Deacon (Book I, Chapters 14-16).

Election and Lineage

Following the passing of legendary figures Ibor and Aio, who are credited with leading the Lombards from the island of Scandia, the Lombards adopted a Germanic tradition of electing a king. Agilmund was chosen due to his noble lineage as the son of Aio and a member of the prestigious Gunging (or Guging) clan.

Dual Leadership and Bulgarian Attack

Despite Agilmund's designation as king, the Lombards retained a strong reliance on the authority of their dukes. Agilmund ruled for 33 years, maintaining peaceful relations with his neighbors until an unexpected attack by the Bulgars.

Death and Succession

During the Bulgarian raid, Agilmund tragically lost his life, leaving behind his only daughter as a captive. The Lombards subsequently elected Lamisso as their new king.
