Abdul Karim Qasim: Iraq's Final Premier before the Revolution
Early Life and Career:Abdul Karim Qasim, the last Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Iraq, was born in 1914 in Baghdad. He joined the Iraqi Army in 1934 and rose through the ranks, becoming a general by the late 1950s.
Premiership and Arab Federation:
In February 1958, Iraq and Jordan united to form the Arab Federation. Qasim became the Prime Minister of the Federation, but his tenure lasted only two months.
July Revolution and Overthrow of Monarchy:
In July 1958, a military coup, known as the July Revolution, took place in Iraq. The monarchy was overthrown, and King Faisal II and his family were executed. Qasim was arrested and sentenced to death by the newly established People's Court.
Commutation and Post-Revolution Life:
However, Qasim's death sentence was commuted, and he was not executed. He retired from politics and remained in Iraq until his death in 1989.
