AJ Walker: Trailblazing Journalist Breaks Barriers

AJ Walker, an experienced American journalist, has finally achieved the long-awaited freedom to wear her hair in cornrows on-air. The landmark decision comes amidst a growing movement supporting individuals with marginalized appearances...

Breaking the Mold

For over a decade, Walker, a lead investigative reporter for CBS 12 News in West Palm Beach, Florida, has been advocating for her right to wear a hairstyle more representative of her cultural identity. She recalls countless instances where former employers dismissed her requests to transition her straightened hair to its "natural" state. "I've had people say, 'Let's keep your hair the way it is,'" Walker remembers. "Others told me, 'It would be too much of a change.'"

A Time for Change

Following the loss of her mother, Walker felt compelled to make another attempt to advocate for her rights. Now, she proudly sports the hairstyle she always wanted, a tribute to her late mother. "Wearing my hair this way is a part of my culture," she explains. "It's something my mom taught me, something that matters deeply to my self-esteem."

Legal Protections Emerge

Walker's bold and beautiful move aligns with a societal shift towards protecting individuals who face discrimination based on hair or hairstyle. In February 2019, the New York City Commission on Human Rights made it illegal to exhibit "race-based animus" toward hair and provided legal recourse for victims of such discrimination.

A Symbol of Confidence and Empowerment

For Walker, the addition of cornrows has ignited her confidence both as a journalist and role model for other African American women. "I wear this hairstyle for me," she says. "It's a profound reflection of who I am."
