Alain Bosquet: Early Life and Education
Alain Bosquet was born into a literary family. His father, Alexandre Biske, was a Symbolist poet who had initially emigrated to Bulgaria (Varna). In 1925, the Biske family relocated to Brussels, where Anatoly (Alain's birth name) first attended school.
In 1938, he enrolled at the Free University of Brussels, becoming actively involved in various periodicals. The outbreak of World War II saw Bosquet serving in the Belgian army. Following Belgium's capitulation to Germany, he enlisted in the French Armed Forces.
Emigration and Wartime Service
In 1942, Bosquet moved to the United States and worked as an editor for the magazines "Free France" and "Voix de France." There, he befriended European writers exiled by the war, including Maurice Maeterlinck, Jules Romains, and Thomas Mann.
In 1944, as part of the American forces commanded by General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Bosquet participated in the D-Day landings in Normandy, France.
Post-War Career
After the war in 1945, Bosquet worked in the Allied Control Council in Berlin. Upon returning to Paris in 1951, he resumed his studies at the Sorbonne.
