Early Life and Education
Johann Abraham Immer was born into a family of pastors and initially pursued a career as a bookbinder. However, in 1834, his theological calling led him to study divinity in Bern, Berlin, and Bonn.
Pastoral Ministry
In 1839, Immer was appointed as a parish priest in Burgdorf. In 1845, he married Julie Kinast, a schoolteacher and advocate for women's rights. In the same year, he became the pastor in Büren an der Aare.
Academic Career
Immer's distinguished academic career began in 1850 when he became an extraordinary professor of Dogmatics and New Testament at the University of Bern. He served as the university's rector from 1852 to 1853 and was promoted to a full professorship in 1856.
Theological Perspective
Immer aligned himself with the liberal theological school of Schleiermacher and Lutz, striving to reconcile piety with intellectual freedom. His progressive views drew criticism from opponents who accused him and the University of Bern's theological faculty of heterodoxy.
Academic Recognition
Immer's contributions to scholarship were recognized with honorary doctorates in theology from the University of Basel and in philosophy from the University of Bern. His work exemplifies the ongoing dialogue within religious thought and the pursuit of both faith and reason.
