Biography of Alberto Gonzalez

Alberto Gonzalez is a Spanish programmer and composer, best known for his work in the video game industry. Despite having no formal musical education, Gonzalez began his career in the video game industry in 1988 as an artist for the emerging company New Frontier. It was during this time that he discovered a copy of the music editor "Wham the Music Box" for the ZX Spectrum computer. Impressed by the results, his colleagues encouraged him to explore music further, and Gonzalez began to combine his duties as an artist with composing music.

In order to have more control over his compositions, Gonzalez also taught himself assembly programming for the Z80 processor, enabling him to create his own music players. At the time, he had no specific musical preferences and was primarily interested in creating music for video games. He drew inspiration from influential game composers of the time, such as Tim Follin, Ben Daglish, Jonathan Dunn, and David Whittaker.

Gonzalez's first commercial works as a musician came at the age of 16, when he composed music for the Spanish versions of games like "Altered Beast," "Snoopy," "Ghost Busters 2," and "Power Drift," which were ported from the ZX Spectrum to the MSX. His first published game with his own music was "Hostages" for the ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, and MSX.

In 1992, Gonzalez co-founded the company Bit Managers, which was formed from the merger of New Frontier. In this new venture, he continued his work as a composer, creating music and music players for games across various platforms, including Game Boy, NES, SNES, Sega Game Gear, Sega Master System, Game Boy Advance, and Sony Playstation.

To create his music for 8-bit platforms, Gonzalez utilized his own music editor called "Compact Editor," which ran on the ZX Spectrum. This three-channel sequencer with a tracker interface allowed him to edit the core composition, which was then exported as a text file and manually refined to adapt to the capabilities of the specific platform. This editor was also used in the creation of music for the first Game Boy Advance game Gonzalez worked on.

Alberto Gonzalez's contributions to the video game industry have left a lasting impact, particularly in the realm of music composition. His ability to blend his artistic talents with his programming skills has led to the creation of memorable soundtracks that have enhanced the gaming experience for countless players worldwide.
