Biography of Alberto Suarez Lasso

Alberto Suarez Lasso is a Spanish Paralympian who competes in marathon races in the T12 category for athletes with visual impairments. He was born on December 19, 1977, in Riosa, Spain.

Early Life and Career

Since childhood, Alberto faced vision problems, and by his teenage years, his sight was severely impaired. It was during this time that he first considered a career as a Paralympian. In the early years, he focused on training and avoided major competitions. However, his passion for sports and the desire for medals grew stronger over time.

In 2011, Alberto began training for the qualifying races for the Spanish national team for the London Paralympic Games. That same year, he competed in the IPC Athletics World Championships in New Zealand, where he emerged as the winner in the marathon event. Crossing the finish line, he set a new world record in the T12 category with a time of 2:28:10.

Road to Gold in London

In the 2012 season, Alberto's main goal was to bring home the coveted gold medal from the London Paralympic Games. Around the same time, he was chosen by the organization 'Plan ADO' to receive a sports grant worth several thousand euros. As the Olympic Games approached, Alberto's name appeared in the press as one of the athletes expected to win a medal.

At the Paralympic Games, Alberto competed in several disciplines, including the marathon, 5000m, and 10000m races. However, it was in the marathon event where he truly excelled, finishing first with a two-minute lead over his closest competitor. His gold medal became the eighth for Spain at the Games.

Post-Olympic Achievements and Recognition

After returning home, Alberto continued his training and also devoted himself to charitable endeavors. For his contributions, he was honored with the 'Asturian Best Sportspersons' award. Immediately after winning the gold medal, Alberto received the 'Best Athlete of the Year' award from the 'Asturian Sports Press Association'.
