Prince Albert of Saxony: The Last Governor of the Austrian Netherlands
Prince Albert was born in Dresden, Saxony, on November 11, 1738, as the youngest son of King Augustus III of Poland and Maria Josepha of Austria.
Marriage and Connection to the Habsburgs
In 1766, Albert married Archduchess Maria Christina, the beloved daughter of Empress Maria Theresa. Despite the lack of political advantage, Albert's deep connection to his spouse allowed him to enter the intimate circle of the Habsburg family.
Governorship of Hungary and the Netherlands
From 1765 to 1780, Albert served as Governor of Hungary, residing in Bratislava. In 1780, he was appointed Governor of the Austrian Netherlands in Brussels, where he oversaw the construction of the Laeken Palace.
Defeat and Return to Vienna
However, Albert's governorship in the Netherlands was marred by the French Revolution. He suffered a defeat at the Battle of Jemappes and retreated to Vienna.
Art Collection and Legacy
Prince Albert was renowned for his passion for collecting graphics and engravings, amassing a vast collection that formed the basis of Vienna's Albertina Museum. As he and Maria Christina had no children, Albert's vast art collection was inherited by his adopted son, Archduke Karl Johann.
Death and Burial
Prince Albert died on February 10, 1822, and was buried alongside his wife in the Imperial Crypt in Vienna. His enduring legacy includes not only his vast art collection but also his role as a devoted member of the Habsburg family and a pivotal figure in the cultural history of Austria.
