Alec Holowka was a renowned Canadian game designer and developer who co-founded Infinite Fall and created critically acclaimed titles such as Night in the Woods and Aquaria.
Early Life and Introduction to Gaming
Born in Winnipeg, Canada, Holowka's fascination with programming began at the tender age of eight when his father gifted him a Basic Fun book. This sparked his interest in computer science, leading him to join Zaphire Productions, a free software development group.
Professional Journey with Bit Blot
Holowka's early career was marked by involvement in several unsuccessful projects, including a fantasy multiplayer action game for PC in Winnipeg and a combat racing game for Xbox 360 in Vancouver. However, his breakthrough came in 2007 when he collaborated with Derek Yu for the satirical game "I'm O.K – A Murder Simulator," a response to activist Jack Thompson's anti-violence rhetoric.
Inspired by their shared vision, Holowka and Yu, along with Chris Hanson and Phil Jones, formed Bit Blot and developed Aquaria. Released in December 2007, Aquaria won the Seumas McNally Grand Prize at the Independent Games Festival.
Founding Infinite Fall and Night in the Woods
In 2013, Holowka and Scott Benson launched a successful crowdfunding campaign for their new game, Night in the Woods. Developed under the banner of Infinite Fall, Night in the Woods was released in 2017 to critical acclaim, earning a BAFTA for Best Narrative.
Controversies and Tragic Death
In August 2019, Holowka was accused of sexual assault by Zoe Quinn, whom he briefly lived with in 2012. Night in the Woods developers severed ties with Holowka promptly, stating they had seen corroborating evidence.
Tragically, Holowka died by suicide on September 1, 2019. His sister revealed that he had battled mood and personality disorders throughout his life and had experienced abuse. Despite seeking therapy and medication, the darkness consumed him. Holowka expressed his best wishes for Quinn and others before his passing.
