Rankin's post stemmed from an alarming case of a rare strain of influenza that struck her niece, Erin. The family's experience prompted Rankin to speak out about the importance of vaccination.
A Heartbreaking Reminder of Infant Vulnerability
Rankin shared a shocking photo of her tiny niece on Facebook, warning parents that children face potential deadly risks even before they reach the age of consent for immunization. "Reason #1736493983283763 to vaccinate your children?" she wrote. "My 7-week-old niece has HIB."
The Cause of Haemophilus Influenzae Infection
Haemophilus influenzae (Hib) is a bacteria that can cause a range of complications, from relatively mild to life-threatening respiratory and central nervous system infections. Rankin emphasized that available vaccines virtually eliminate the risk of disease, while for those who remain unprotected, the potential for a fatal outcome is a harsh reality.
Timing of Vaccination: A Crucial Factor
The first dose of the Hib vaccine for consenting children is typically given around two months of age. However, Erin was not yet eligible for vaccination. It remains unclear how she acquired the Hib infection, which had entered her bloodstream.
The Importance of Protecting Even the Youngest
Rankin's message stressed the critical importance of vaccination for children of all ages, even before they reach the recommended vaccination schedule. "So before you say you're not vaccinating your kids because 'it's your choice' and 'vaccines don't work on vaccinated people', remember that children can still get these diseases before they're old enough to be vaccinated," she wrote.

In an update to her Facebook post, Rankin shared that Erin had been fortunate to make a recovery, with negative test results for meningitis. However, she acknowledged the ongoing debate surrounding immunization.
