Childhood and Early Life
Alexander Gerlitz was born on July 31, 1989, in Gorkovskoye, Kazakhstan. His parents, an educator and a librarian, instilled in him a passion for sports and education. Growing up with his older sister, Alexander excelled in various sports, including volleyball, basketball, soccer, track and field, and skiing.
The Accident and Rehabilitation
In 2011, while completing his university studies, Alexander was severely injured in a car accident. The accident left him with permanent damage to his arm. After a year of rehabilitation, he remained unable to fully regain its functionality.
Para-Sports Career
Determined to overcome his physical limitations, Alexander turned to para-sports in 2014. He initially resisted training in cross-country skiing, but the guidance of his coaches proved transformative. Within four months, he won the Kazakhstan championship.
For three consecutive seasons (2015-2017), Alexander dominated the Kazakhstani para-cross-country skiing scene. In 2018, he made his Paralympic debut at the Pyeongchang Winter Games.
Despite placing just off the podium in the freestyle standing race, Alexander's fourth-place finish marked Kazakhstan's highest Paralympic result in 24 years. His subsequent performances secured him a place among the top ten in various events.
Personal Life
Alexander's personal life is filled with happiness. He met his wife, Anastasia, as a young teenager. After reconnecting in Petropavlovsk, they began dating and got married in 2018. They now share a son.
2022 Beijing Paralympics
As the captain of Kazakhstan's national Paralympic team, Alexander competed in the 2022 Beijing Winter Paralympics. Despite a disappointing start in the biathlon sprint, he redeemed himself in the 10km cross-country race.
On March 8, Alexander won the bronze medal, securing Kazakhstan's first-ever Paralympic medal in para-biathlon. The podium finish was a testament to Alexander's perseverance and the support of his loved ones.
