Alex Thomson is a professional British yacht racer and skipper. He has been competing in the IMOCA 60 class since 2003 under the sponsorship of 'Hugo Boss', making it one of the longest-standing partnerships in professional sailing. Thomson was born on April 18, 1974, in the small town of Bangor, North Wales. He has a twin sister, Sarah Thomson, and a younger brother, David Thomson.
Record-Breaking Achievements
In 1999, at the age of 25, Thomson earned the reputation of being the youngest skipper to win the Clipper Round the World Race, a circumnavigation yacht race. He still holds this record to this day. Thomson shares a long and trusting friendship with one of his crew members, Sir Keith Mills, who later became one of the founders of 'Alex Thomson Racing'.
In the following year, Thomson won the Round Britain and Ireland race and made his solo racing debut. In 2003, he broke the 24-hour distance record on a monohull boat. He then surpassed his own record in 2007 during the Vendée Globe Race. Thomson was one of the winners of the 2007 Barcelona World Race, securing second place and setting a new world record for monohull distance. Throughout his career, Thomson has aimed to become the first British sailor to win the Vendée Globe, known as the toughest challenge in the world of sailing, comparable to Mount Everest for sailors. However, just three weeks before the race was scheduled to start in November 2008, his yacht collided with a French fishing vessel, forcing Thomson to withdraw from the race.
Personal Challenges and Achievements
In January 2011, Thomson had to leave the Barcelona World Race due to family circumstances. His newborn son was diagnosed with heart problems. On July 26, 2012, Thomson broke another record by crossing an ocean on a monohull boat. He crossed the finish line at Lizard Point, Falmouth, UK. Starting on November 10, 2012, from the French port of Les Sables-d'Olonne, Alex Thomson participated in the 2012-2013 Vendée Globe and secured third place with a time of 80 days, 19 hours, 23 minutes, and 43 seconds.
