Alexander Beider: A Leading Scholar in Jewish Onomastics
Alexander Borisovich Beider, a prominent French linguist, is renowned as the foremost contemporary scholar in the field of Jewish onomastics. Born in Moscow into a family with roots in the Kiev Governorate, Beider has made significant contributions to the study of Jewish names and surnames.
Early Life and Education
After graduating from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) in 1986, Beider earned his PhD in applied mathematics from the same institution in 1989. While pursuing his doctoral studies, he became captivated by the origins of Jewish surnames in Russia, sparking his work on his debut publication, "Dictionary of Jewish Surnames from the Russian Empire."
Emigration and Academic Career in Paris
In 1990, Beider relocated to Paris with his family and continued his research in anthroponymy and Judaica. In 1999, he successfully defended his dissertation at the University of Paris-Sorbonne on the topic "Names of Ashkenazi Jews: History and Migrations (11th-19th Centuries)."
Groundbreaking Publications on Jewish Onomastics
Beider has authored numerous comprehensive dictionaries on Jewish surnames and given names:
Dictionary of Jewish Family Names in the Russian Empire (1993)
Dictionary of Jewish Family Names in Prague (15th-18th Centuries) (1995)
Dictionary of Jewish Family Names in the Kingdom of Poland (1996)
Dictionary of Jewish Family Names in Galicia (2004)
Dictionary of Ashkenazic Given Names (2001 and 2009)These dictionaries feature extensive lexical entries, detailed indexes, and rigorous scientific methodologies, making them invaluable resources for scholars and researchers.
Innovative Algorithms for Name Comparison
In collaboration with Steven Morse, Beider devised the Beider-Morse algorithm for phonetic comparison of names, a groundbreaking technique for determining the linguistic relationships between different surnames and given names.
Research on the History of Yiddish
In recent years, Beider has expanded his research interests to include the history of Yiddish. His work in this area has shed light on the language's evolution and its influence on Jewish culture.
