Early Career and Schalke

Teutonia SuS and Schalke 04 Youth

Manuel Baumjohann began his footballing journey at Teutonia SuS 20/58 Waltrop before joining Schalke 04's youth academy at the age of 13. By 17, he had already made it to the professional team, initially featuring for the second team in the Oberliga Westfalen.

Bundesliga Debut

Baumjohann's Bundesliga debut came on February 25, 2006, as a substitute for Lincoln against Nürnberg. He made his international debut in the UEFA Cup round of 16 against Palermo on March 16, 2006, also as a substitute.

Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayern Munich

Move to Mönchengladbach

After playing just one more game for Schalke, Baumjohann joined Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he made three appearances in the 2006/07 season.

Breakthrough and Goal of the Month

His goal against Werder Bremen on August 30, 2008, marked not only his first Bundesliga goal but also won him the Bundesliga Goal of the Month award.

Transfer to Bayern Munich

In the 2009/10 season, Baumjohann moved to Bayern Munich on a free transfer and was included in the starting lineup for the season opener against Hoffenheim.

Return to Schalke and Kaiserslautern

Return to Schalke

On January 2, 2010, Schalke 04 coach Felix Magath and Bayern Munich management agreed on Baumjohann's return to Gelsenkirchen.

Transfer to Kaiserslautern

On August 21, 2012, Baumjohann terminated his contract with Schalke and signed a one-year deal with Kaiserslautern, which could be extended by two more years.

Hertha Berlin and Injuries

Transfer to Hertha Berlin

In early June 2013, Baumjohann signed a three-year contract with Hertha Berlin.

Knee Injury and Recurrence

Early in the 2013/14 season, he tore his cruciate ligament and only returned to action in the middle of the second half of the season. However, his injury woes continued in August 2014 when he suffered a recurrence.

International Career

Youth and Under-21 Teams

From September 30, 2003, to March 25, 2004, Baumjohann played seven times for the German under-17 team, making his debut against Belgium. He also made two appearances for the under-21 team in 2009.
