Early Life and Career
Alexander Golovko was born in Kherson, Ukraine, on January 6, 1972. He initially had no aspirations to become a professional footballer, playing only for collective farms until the age of 18.
After graduating from high school, Golovko enrolled in the Kherson branch of the National University of Shipbuilding named after Admiral Makarov. There, he was spotted by former Tavriya Simferopol player Yuri Bondarenko, who recommended him to Tavriya manager Anatoly Zayaev.
Golovko made his debut for Tavriya's first team at the age of 19. In the 1991 Soviet First League season, he played 25 matches and scored 1 goal.
Success with Tavriya
In 1992, Tavriya played in the inaugural Ukrainian Premier League. The team won their group and faced Dynamo Kyiv in the Championship Match, which they won 1-0. Golovko played every minute of the season and became the Ukrainian champion at the age of 20.
The following season, Tavriya qualified for the Champions League. Golovko made his European debut against Shelbourne on August 19, 1992. Tavriya reached the Round of 16 before losing to FC Sion.
Dynamo Kyiv's Dominance
In 1995, Golovko joined Dynamo Kyiv, managed by Jozsef Sabo. He quickly established himself as a regular and won his second Ukrainian championship title that season, along with his first Ukrainian Cup.
Under manager Valeriy Lobanovsky, Dynamo continued to dominate Ukrainian football. Golovko won further championships and Ukrainian Cups, forming a formidable defense with Vladyslav Vashchuk, Oleg Luzhny, and Yuri Dmitrulin.
International Recognition
Golovko's performances for Dynamo caught the attention of Western European clubs. He trialled with Liverpool but ultimately joined the newly-crowned Scottish Premier League champions, Rangers, for a fee of £8 million.
Return to Tavriya and Coaching
After his stint in Scotland, Golovko returned to his former club Tavriya. He played an instrumental role in the team's rise up the Ukrainian Premier League table, becoming captain and leading them to a fifth-place finish in 2005.
International Career
Golovko made his international debut for Ukraine on April 26, 1995, against Estonia. He played a key role in Ukraine's qualifying campaigns for several major tournaments, captaining the team on 13 occasions.
Coaching Career
After retiring from playing, Golovko pursued a coaching career. He has managed the Ukrainian U-19 and U-20 national teams, as well as the Ukrainian First League club Kremin Kremenchuk.
