Biography of Alexander Chaika
Alexander Chaika was born in the city of Sumy, Ukraine in 1975. Information about his childhood is lacking in biographical sources, although it can be speculated that his family experienced financial difficulties. However, some sources do not indicate any specific hardships in Chaika's family. He had a passion for sports, particularly football, and maintained a good physical condition.
At the age of fourteen, Chaika was convicted for a group rape in 1989. However, he was released from incarceration in 1991. Soon after his release, he began his deadly crime spree.
On January 31, 1994, Chaika committed his first known murder in Moscow. The victim was a thirty-eight-year-old woman who was brutally stabbed twenty-one times. Her younger son was able to identify her body. Although there was little evidence of sexual assault, the crime scene suggested a violent murder.
Over the following weeks, Chaika continued his killing spree, targeting elderly women in Moscow. On February 7, an eighty-two-year-old woman was killed, suffering eight stab wounds. Two days later, a fifty-year-old woman was brutally murdered with seventeen stab wounds. On February 16, a forty-year-old woman was killed, leaving behind significant evidence for investigators.
Despite the seemingly ordinary nature of Chaika's crimes compared to other serial killers, the investigation into his murders was significantly effective. After the second murder, experts determined that a serial killer was at work based on the nature of the knife wounds and the perpetrator's height and age. It was also concluded that the killer was likely not a resident of Moscow but a visitor.
An extensive operation, known as "Shuba," was launched to find the serial killer. Female undercover agents wearing fur coats, concealing bulletproof vests, patrolled the streets of Moscow while male operatives without fur coats observed the surroundings. This operation led to the mistaken arrest of an unlucky hooligan attempting to rob a woman. However, it was later confirmed that he had no connection to the serial murders.
Despite this setback, the operation continued, and Chaika was finally apprehended near Frunzenskaya metro station. It is worth noting that the operation "Shuba" stands out as one of the few instances where a serial killer was captured due to proactive investigative measures rather than chance.
Chaika's planned marriage, scheduled for February 19, 1994, never took place. His fate was sealed with a death sentence by firing squad.
