Early Life and FamilyPrince Alexander of Belgium was born on July 4, 1942, to King Leopold III and Princess Lilian Baels. He was the eldest child of his father's second marriage and had two half-brothers, King Baudouin I and King Albert II. Prince Alexander's childhood was marked by turmoil and instability. His family was placed under house arrest until 1945, when they were liberated by the United States Army. The family then went into exile in Switzerland, returning to Belgium after a national referendum in 1950.
Education and Career
Prince Alexander initially pursued a degree in medicine but later switched to business. He led a relatively private life, distancing himself from public duties associated with his royal status. In 1960, he retired from all official engagements.
Controversial Marriage
On March 14, 1991, Prince Alexander secretly married Lea Wolman, a twice-divorced woman. The marriage was kept a secret until 1998 due to the prince's fear of his mother's disapproval. The couple did not have any children.
Legal Ambiguity
Although the children of King Leopold III's second marriage are generally considered ineligible for the throne, some constitutional law experts argue that there is no sufficient legal basis for this. However, Prince Alexander's secret marriage violated Article 85 of the Belgian Constitution, which disqualifies any descendant of King Leopold I who marries without the sovereign's permission from inheriting the throne.
