Alexandra Owens: The Girl Who Danced with Leonardo DiCaprio in 'Titanic'
Alexandra Owens, an American actress, gained fame for her role as Cora Cartmell in the blockbuster film 'Titanic' in 1997. As a 26-year-old, Owens reminisces about her time on set with Leonardo DiCaprio, describing him as charming and quirky. Between takes, DiCaprio would treat Owens to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Owens reveals that DiCaprio's dance moves were incredible and made her own performance shine. Dancing with DiCaprio was a transformative experience for her, allowing her to feel as if the whole world around her was changing.
The Journey to 'Titanic'
Originally from San Diego, Owens landed the coveted role after her mother took her to Mexico for an open casting call for minor roles in 'Titanic'. When she found out she had been cast, she was so excited that she ran around her house like a little maniac. Unfortunately, her very first scene in the film was eventually cut from the final version. In that scene, her character, Cora, sat next to Jack, played by DiCaprio, as he sketched in his album. Owens revealed that she took a few of DiCaprio's drawings as mementos, but they were stolen from her trailer.
A Memorable Experience with Leonardo DiCaprio
Owens assures us that DiCaprio was just as sweet and charming as his on-screen character. At the time, DiCaprio was already gaining attention in teen magazines like 'Tiger Beat' and 'J-14', but Owens doesn't remember his heartthrob status being an issue on set. She simply enjoyed the attention he showered on her.
Owens recalls, "I didn't care about any of that. I thought Leo was my new best friend, that he was so cool. During breaks, we would chat, and Kate [Winslet] would come over and talk too. She was obsessed with my sister's hair and would always play with it. Leo would goof around and try to chase my sister to tickle her."
A Touching Moment on Set
One of the most memorable scenes for Owens was when Jack asks Cora to dance with him during an Irish jig. As the music fades, Jack offers his hand to Rose and asks Cora, "I'll dance with her if you don't mind." For a brief moment, the little girl looks at the couple with sadness and jealousy. Then Jack smiles and says, "Don't worry, you're still my favorite girl!"
Owens became so attached to DiCaprio during the filming that she even tried to find a way to meet him outside of work. She recalls, "At one point, I invited him to go trick-or-treating with me. Leo said something like, 'That's so cute. I'll talk to my manager, and we'll see if we can make it happen'." Unfortunately, the Halloween meet-up never happened.
A Continuing Acting Career
Today, Owens resides in Los Angeles and continues her acting career. Recently, she shared a school essay she had written on Facebook during her time on 'Titanic'. In the essay, Owens vividly describes her feelings when she found out she had landed the role. She also writes, "During the Oscars, they showed a clip from 'Titanic', and there I was, Alexandra Kathryn Owens-Sarno, in that clip. I was so proud of myself. I couldn't believe my eyes. For me, it was the beginning of my career."
