Biography of Alfonso VIII, King of Castile

Early Life and Accession to the Throne

King Alfonso VIII of Castile ascended to the throne in 1158, following the death of his father, Sancho III, when he was only three years old. During his minority, Castile became embroiled in a struggle for regency among powerful noble families. The primary contenders included the de Lara and de Castro families, as well as Alfonso's uncle, Ferdinand II of Leon. In 1160, the de Lara family emerged victorious in the Battle of Loeches, defeating the de Castros.

Assumption of Royal Authority

At around the age of fifteen, Alfonso VIII assumed real power. He spent much of his reign engaged in conflicts with other Spanish kingdoms. In 1186, he annexed part of Rioja, formerly under Navarre's rule, to Castile.

Foreign Alliances and Threats

Alfonso VIII sought alliances with England, France, and Germany, but faced a formidable coalition of rulers on the Iberian Peninsula. Only an interdict imposed by the pope on Leon and Portugal saved him from complete defeat.

Reconquest of Spain

In the latter part of his reign, Alfonso VIII forged alliances with other Spanish monarchs and dealt a decisive blow to Muslim power at the Battle of Tolosa in 1212.

Legacy and Reign Length

Alfonso VIII's reign of over 56 years is the longest in Castilian history and later in the Spanish monarchy. His rule was marked by conflicts, alliances, and territorial expansion, leaving an enduring impact on the history of the Iberian Peninsula.

Marriages and Children

In 1176, Alfonso VIII married Eleanor of England, daughter of Henry II Plantagenet. Together, they had ten children, including:

Berengaria of Castile, Queen of Castile

Blanche of Castile, Queen of France
Ferdinand, heir apparent (died young)
Eleanor, Queen of Aragon
Constance
Enrique I, Alfonso VIII's successor as King of Castile
