Taubman's business dealings have been marred by allegations of improprieties and illegal activities. In 2002, he was convicted of antitrust violations, leading to a $7.5 million fine and a one-year prison sentence.

Taubman served approximately nine months in federal prison before being released.

Among his major contributions are his donations to the University of Michigan, the Taubman Medical Library, the Taubman Health Center, and the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning.
