Biography of Alibek Kasymov

Alibek Kasymov is a Soviet and Kazakh military leader who served as the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan from October 16, 1995, to October 30, 1996. He holds the rank of Lieutenant General.

Early Life and Education

Kasymov graduated from the Alma-Ata Higher Combined Arms Command School in 1975, specializing in "officer-engineer for the operation of tracked and wheeled vehicles." He furthered his education at the Frunze Military Academy, completing his studies in 1985.

Military Career

From 1975 to 1977, Kasymov served as the commander of a motorized rifle platoon in the 79th Guards Motor Rifle Division, which was part of the 1st Tank Army in the Kaliningrad Military District. He then became the commander of the 6th Motorized Rifle Regiment in the same division from 1977 to 1980, leading the best company in the district.

From 1981 to 1985, Kasymov held the position of deputy battalion commander in the 79th Guards Motor Rifle Division. He later served as the chief of staff and deputy commander of the training motorized rifle regiment, as well as the senior officer, deputy chief, and chief of the department of the Operational Directorate of the Staff of the Transcaucasian Military District.

In May-August 1992, Kasymov was the first deputy chief of staff of the 40th Army of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan. From August to November 1992, he served as the chief of the operational directorate and deputy chief of the General Staff of the Ministry of Defense. In November 1992, Kasymov was appointed as the first deputy Minister of Defense and chief of the General Staff, replacing S. Altynbekov.

Minister of Defense and Later Career

From October 16, 1995, to October 30, 1996, Kasymov held the position of Minister of Defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In 1997, he was appointed as the military attaché of Kazakhstan in Turkey.

In addition to his military career, Kasymov has received several awards and honors, including the Order of Dang 2nd degree (2001) and the Order "For Service to the Motherland in the Armed Forces of the USSR" 3rd degree (1990). He has also been decorated with various medals, including the Medal "For Strengthening Combat Cooperation," the Medal "Veteran of the Armed Forces of the USSR," and the Jubilee Medals "60 Years of the Armed Forces of the USSR" and "70 Years of the Armed Forces of the USSR." Furthermore, Kasymov has been recognized with the Medal "For Impeccable Service" in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degrees.

In recognition of his contributions, Kasymov has also been honored with several foreign awards.
