Biography of Alice Munro

Alice Munro is a Canadian writer, born on July 10, 1931, in Wingham, Ontario, Canada. After graduating from school in 1949, she enrolled at the University of Western Ontario. It was there that she met her future husband, James Munro. They got married in 1951, and Alice, abandoning her university studies, moved with her husband to Vancouver.

In 1963, Alice Munro moved to Victoria, British Columbia, where she opened a bookstore called "Munro's Books," which became one of the best bookstores in Vancouver. In 1968, Munro received the Governor General's Award for her collection of short stories titled "Dance of the Happy Shades." In 1971, she was honored with the Canadian Booksellers Association Award for her novel "Lives of Girls and Women."

Throughout her twenty-eight years of writing, Alice Munro has published one novel, "Lives of Girls and Women," and seven collections of short stories. She has been honored with numerous literary awards and honors. In addition to the aforementioned works, notable collections include "Who Do You Think You Are?" (1978) and "The Progress of Love" (1986), both of which received the Governor General's Award. "Who Do You Think You Are?" was also recognized with the Booker Prize.

In 1986, Alice Munro became the first recipient of the Marian Engel Award, receiving a prize of $10,000. In 1995, she was awarded the W.H. Smith Award for her book "Open Secrets," recognized as the best book published in England. In 1999, the same collection received the National Book Critics' Circle Fiction Award in the United States. In 2004, Munro received the Giller Prize for her collection of stories titled "Runaway," and in 2005, she was awarded the Commonwealth Writers' Prize.

Alice Munro's stories have been published in prestigious magazines such as "The New Yorker," "The Paris Review," and "Atlantic Monthly." Many of her stories have been adapted for radio and film. The film adaptation of her story "Boys and Girls" won an Oscar in 1986 for Best Live Action Short Film.

After her divorce in 1972, Alice Munro moved back to Ontario. In 1976, she married Gerald Fremlin. She has a daughter named Sheila, who has published memoirs about her mother. Alice Munro currently resides in her home in Huron County, Ontario.
