Biography of Aline Charigot
Aline Charigot (May 23, 1859 – June 27, 1915) was the wife of Pierre-Auguste Renoir. She was born in Essoyes, France on May 23, 1859. Her ancestors had been living in Essoyes for several generations. Aline's mother was a seamstress and her father was a baker. In August 1860, Claude, her father, left his wife and Aline, who was then just fifteen months old.
Difficult Childhood
Aline had a difficult childhood. Her mother found work far from home, and her father rarely visited Essoyes. Aline was primarily raised by her aunt Victorine and uncle Claude. She attended a girls' school in Essoyes, which was run by nuns and was established in 1826 by the wealthy Darras family. At the school, Aline also learned household tasks and sewing, which would later become her profession.
Life in Paris
In 1872, Aline's mother went to work in Paris. In 1874, at the age of 15, Aline joined her mother in Paris and began working there as a seamstress. One day, during breakfast at a milk shop on Rue Saint-Georges, she met Pierre-Auguste Renoir. She became his model and lover. Renoir first portrayed Aline at the age of 20 in "The Oarsmen at Chatou".
Marriage and Family
From 1881 to 1883, Renoir embarked on a journey, and Aline followed him. In 1885, their first son, Pierre, was born. On April 14, 1890, Renoir and Aline got married at the town hall of the 9th district of Paris. In September 1894, their second son, Jean Renoir, was born. Aline invited her distant relative, Gabrielle Renard, to help in raising their son.
Final Years
Aline and Pierre-Auguste Renoir's third son was born in Essoyes on August 4, 1901. Aline passed away at the age of 56 in Nice on June 27, 1915.
