Elvin Hayes, born on November 17, 1945, in Rayville, Louisiana, was an exceptional basketball center and power forward in the 1970s, recognized as one of the best forwards of that era.

Early Career and NBA Debut

Standing at 6'8" (2.06 m) and weighing 235 pounds (107 kg), Hayes possessed an impressive physical presence. He honed his skills at the University of Houston before launching his professional career with the San Diego Rockets in 1968. In his debut season, he made an immediate impact, leading the NBA in scoring with 28.4 points per game and ranking second in rebounds with 17.1 per game.

Dominance in Rebounding and Scoring

The following season, Hayes established himself as the NBA's top rebounder, averaging 16.9 rebounds per game. His ability to control the boards and score efficiently from both mid-range and close-range made him one of the league's most dangerous players. Under his guidance, the Rockets secured their first 40-win season in franchise history.

Triumph with the Baltimore Bullets

In 1972, Hayes joined the Baltimore Bullets, marking the beginning of his most successful period. During his nine-year tenure with the Bullets, the team won four Central Division titles, three Eastern Conference championships, and the NBA championship in 1978, defeating the Seattle SuperSonics in a seven-game series. Hayes also recorded his second NBA rebounding title in the 1973-74 season, averaging 18.1 rebounds per game.

Return to the Rockets and Retirement

In 1981, Hayes returned to the Rockets, who had relocated to Houston. After three more seasons with his former team, the 38-year-old forward retired in 1984.
