Early Life and EducationAlvis Hermanis was born on March 2, 1946, in Sesava, Latvia, into a farming family. He graduated from Saulkrasti Secondary School and later pursued higher education at the Latvian State University in both history and philology (1964-1967). In 1970, he completed his studies at the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography.
Career at Riga Film Studio
Hermanis began his film career at the Riga Film Studio in 1964. He initially worked as an assistant director (1965-1967) and then as an editor in the screenplay department (1970-1990). From 1987 to 1991, he served as a member of the editorial board for the publication "Literatūra un Māksla."
Founding "ALKO" Film Studio
In 1991, Hermanis co-founded and became head of the film studio "ALKO." The studio quickly established itself as a leading producer of Latvian cinema.
