Early Life and Education
Swiss writer of Russian descent, Alevtina Hornung, known by her pen name Ale Rachmanova, was born in the factory town of Kaslinsky Zavod, now known as Kasli, in the Chelyabinsk region of Russia. Her father was a doctor. Rachmanova began her education in 1916 at the philological faculty of Perm University, completing it during the Civil War in Irkutsk.
Marriage and Exile
In 1921, Rachmanova married Arnulf von Hoyer, an Austrian former prisoner of war. They resided in Perm until their deportation from the USSR in 1925. They initially settled in Vienna before relocating to Salzburg in 1927.
Literary Career
In exile, Rachmanova penned an autobiography based on her personal diaries. Published in German under the pseudonym Ale Rachmanova and translated by her husband, "Studenten, Liebe, Tscheka und Tod" (Students, Love, Cheka, and Death) recounted her experiences from 1916 to 1920. Subsequent installments formed a trilogy that garnered international acclaim.
Despite the widespread success of Rachmanova's books, selling over two million copies in 22 languages, they were never published in Russian.
Later Life and Legacy
In 1945, the Hoyers' only son was killed in battle against Soviet troops in Vienna. The couple relocated to Switzerland in 1946, residing in Ettenhausen until 1949. Arnulf, Rachmanova's constant translator, passed away in 1970, marking the end of her writing career.
