Anatoly Bahuta: Ukrainian Poet

Early Life and Education

Anatoly Bahuta was born on January 2, 1939, in Kyiv, Ukraine, into a family of riverboat workers. From 1952 to 1957, he attended secondary school No. 2 in the city of Nova Kakhovka.

Early Career

After completing his education, Bahuta worked as a painter during the construction of the Dneprodzerzhinsk Hydroelectric Power Station. Subsequently, he worked at the Novokrivorizhskiy Ore-Dressing Plant as part of a Komsomol youth program.

Military Service and Later Employment

Bahuta served in the military before being drafted. Upon his discharge, he became a foreman at the Novaya Kakhovka Electromechanical Plant (EMZ). He also worked as a correspondent for local and regional newspapers.

Literary Beginnings

Beginning in 1959, Bahuta's poetry began to appear sporadically in various literary journals and magazines, including "Perets," "Dnipro," "Ukrayina," "Ranok," and "Molod Ukrainy." His work was also broadcast on regional and national radio and television.

Censorship and Underground Work

In the repressive political climate of the time, much of Bahuta's writings remained unpublished, circulating only among a close circle of friends. Despite the censorship, he continued to write prolifically.

Recognition and Award

In 1991, Bahuta was posthumously awarded the Alexei Kruchenykh International Literary Prize.

Death and Legacy

Anatoly Bahuta passed away on August 1, 1990, in Nova Kakhovka, Kherson Oblast, Ukraine. The school he attended has been named in his honor, and his former home has been transformed into a literary museum, preserving his legacy for future generations.
