Russian Metallurgical Engineer

Nikolai Pavlovich Chistyakov was a pioneering Russian metallurgical engineer specializing in naval armor and its production technology.

Education and Early Career

Nikolai Chistyakov graduated from the Saint Petersburg Polytechnic Institute in 1908 and began working at the Izhora Plant in Kolpino, near Saint Petersburg. In 1914, he traveled to Genoa, Italy, to study cemented armor production at the Ansaldo plant.

Revolution and Post-Revolution

During the first years after the 1917 revolution, Chistyakov served on the board of directors of the Izhora Plant. In the 1920s, he became the plant's chief engineer.

Technical Contributions

Chistyakov made significant contributions to the field of armor production. He authored an unpublished manuscript titled "Armor Production," which was the first comprehensive analysis of armor production in Russia. He established a scientifically sound technology for armor manufacturing.

Chistyakov conducted extensive research on carburizing agents used in the production of heterogeneous cemented armor. He developed a comprehensive understanding of the rolling process for cemented armor.

Fracture Analysis

Chistyakov investigated the correlation between fracture appearance and the quality of alloyed steel. He was among the first in Russia to demonstrate the accuracy of predicting brittle fracture in armor under fire by evaluating the fibrousness of the fracture surface.

Legacy

Nikolai Chistyakov's work laid the foundation for modern armor production in Russia. His student, Sergey Ivanovich Smolensky, later served as the head of the Izhora Plant's Central Research Laboratory (CBL-1) and as chief engineer and deputy director of science at the CBL-1, which later became a branch of the All-Union Research Institute-100.
