Early Life and EducationAlexander Vasylyovych Kalabukhin was born in Ukraine in 1928. He studied music at the Lugansk Music School (1945-1948) and the Kharkiv Conservatory (1952-1953). While at the conservatory, Kalabukhin majored in domra (a Ukrainian folk instrument) and studied conducting under the tutelage of Konstantin L. Doroshenko.
Career in Opera and Symphony
Kalabukhin's conducting career spanned over five decades. He began as an assistant conductor at the Kharkiv Opera and Ballet Theater in 1952, becoming its principal conductor from 1973 to 1978. In 1968, he joined the Kharkiv Philharmonic Orchestra as its principal conductor and artistic director.
Under Kalabukhin's leadership, the Kharkiv Opera and Ballet Theater staged notable productions of operas by Verdi, Tchaikovsky, and Mussorgsky. His concert repertoire with the Kharkiv Philharmonic Orchestra included works by Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Verdi.
Academic Career
Kalabukhin taught at the Kharkiv Conservatory from 1953. He became a professor in 1979 and headed the Department of Opera Preparation. From 1990 to 2009, he served as the chairman of the Kharkiv branch of the National All-Ukrainian Musical Union.
Personal Life and Legacy
Kalabukhin was married to Irina D. Yatsenko, a renowned mezzo-soprano and professor at the Kharkiv Conservatory. He passed away in 2013.
