Early Life: An Avid Reader and Aspiring Writer
Norton's ancestors descended from early settlers and included a Native American great-great-grandmother. Her love for literature blossomed at an early age, inspiring her to become a library patron and write for her school newspaper.
Academic and Professional Pursuits
Between 1930-1932, Norton attended Western Reserve University. She then spent two decades as a librarian at the Cleveland Public Library. In 1950, she joined the publishing firm Gnome Press as an editor.
Literary Beginnings: War Novels and the Pen Name "Andre"
Norton's debut novel, "The Prince Commands," was published in 1934 under the male pseudonym "Andre" or "Andrew" Norton. Despite her true identity being later revealed, she officially adopted the name.
Fantasy and Science Fiction Legacy
In 1947, Norton ventured into the realm of fantasy with "People of the Crater." Her prolific career spanned over 130 novels, including the "Queen of the Sun" space opera series and the "Witch World" and "Elfstone Trilogy" fantasy cycles.
