Early Life and Education

Luís André de Pina Cabral Villas-Boas was born on October 17, 1977, in Porto, Portugal. He grew up speaking fluent English due to his grandmother's Stockport roots. Despite playing football as a goalkeeper for amateur teams Ribeirense and Ramaldense, Villas-Boas's main passion lay elsewhere.

Rise to Prominence

At the age of 16, Villas-Boas met Sir Bobby Robson, then-manager of Porto. Inspired by their shared interests, Robson mentored Villas-Boas, facilitating his training observations at Ipswich Town and his UEFA C coaching license. Under the guidance of Jim Fleeting, Villas-Boas earned his UEFA Pro Licence.

Coaching Career

In 2000, Villas-Boas briefly served as the technical director of the British Virgin Islands football team before becoming assistant coach to José Mourinho. He followed Mourinho to Chelsea and Inter Milan.

In 2009, Villas-Boas returned to Portugal as manager of Académica de Coimbra. He guided the team to a safe 11th place finish and a Portuguese Cup semi-final appearance.

Success with Porto

In 2010, Villas-Boas was appointed manager of Porto. He led the team to triumphs in the Portuguese Cup and UEFA Europa League, becoming the third-youngest coach to win a major European club competition. After resigning in 2011, he joined Chelsea.

Chelsea Tenure and Controversy

Villas-Boas's time at Chelsea was marked by inconsistent results and tensions with senior players. After a defeat to Napoli in the Champions League, he was dismissed in March 2012.

Tottenham Hotspur and Beyond

In 2012, Villas-Boas took over as manager of Tottenham Hotspur. He led the club to a 12-match unbeaten run but departed by mutual consent in December 2013.

He then moved to Russia, where he guided Zenit Saint Petersburg to the Russian Premier League title in 2015 and the Russian Cup in 2016.

In November 2016, Villas-Boas became manager of Shanghai SIPG in the Chinese Super League. He left the club in November 2017.

Personal Life and Family

Villas-Boas is married to Joana Maria de Noronha de Ornelas Teixeira. They have three children: daughters Benedita and Carolina, and son Frederico. His brother, João Luís de Pina Cabral Villas-Boas, is a Portuguese stage and film actor.
