Biography of Andreas Achenbach

Andreas Achenbach, a renowned landscape and marine painter, was born on September 29, 1815, in Kassel. He received his education at the Düsseldorf Academy under the guidance of J. W. Schirmer and traveled extensively.

A Leader of the Düsseldorf School

In 1846, Achenbach settled in Düsseldorf and became the leader of the school, attracting students not only from different parts of Germany but also from other countries. He painted countless views of turbulent and calm seas and their shores during different seasons, atmospheric conditions, and lighting. His subjects ranged from the low coasts of the Netherlands to the rugged, rocky fjords of Scandinavia and the inviting coastal towns of Southern Italy. Achenbach also frequently depicted the mountainous and flat landscapes of Germany, particularly the Rhineland region, as well as lively city views bustling with market or sailor crowds.

A Master of Technical Execution

Achenbach's works combine precise rendering of natural forms, the power of truthful colors, and excellent observation of aerial perspective with superb technical execution. His paintings can be found throughout Europe, in public galleries and private collections. Some of his most famous works include "Scheveningen Dunes" (in the National Gallery in Berlin), "Storm off the Swedish Coast" (in the Städel Museum in Frankfurt), "The Wreck of the Steamship President" (in the Karlsruhe Museum), and "Gardang Fjord near Bergen" (in the Düsseldorf Gallery), among others. The State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg also houses two paintings by Achenbach: "Landscape with a Pond and Grazing Cows" and "Approaching Storm."
