He derived his stage name, Cohen, from his middle name and the name of the street he lived on in Michigan, Hawthorne Rd.

Early Life and Musical Influences

Mayer Hawthorne grew up in a jazz household and was heavily influenced by artists such as Barry White, Leroy Hutson, Mike Terry, and Isaac Hayes. His love for jazz and soul music shaped his musical style and taste.

Breakthrough and Career

In 2008, Hawthorne moved to Los Angeles and signed a contract with 'Stones Throw Records.' Peanut Butter Wolf, the label's founder, was amazed when he first heard Hawthorne's music, mistaking it for classic compositions from the 1960s.
