Early Life and Military Career
Born on November 28, 1920, in the village of Gurovtsy, present-day Ukraine, Ivan Kostyuk graduated from high school and worked as a technical secretary for the local party committee. In January 1941, he joined the Red Army and graduated from the Dnepropetrovsk Artillery School in 1942.
Combat Actions and Heroism
Kostyuk entered active military service in June 1942 and commanded a mortar battery in the 12th Guards Cavalry Regiment. During the January 1945 battle near Flederborn, Poland, Kostyuk's battery played a crucial role in repelling enemy counterattacks, destroying numerous German soldiers.
On March 1-2, 1945, as part of a capture team, Kostyuk's battery destroyed enemy fortifications near the Oilenburg railway station, capturing the station and holding it until reinforcements arrived.
Recognition and Distinguished Service
For his bravery and leadership, Ivan Kostyuk was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on May 31, 1945. After the war, he served in the reserve as a lieutenant colonel and settled in Vinnytsia, Ukraine.
Post-War Career and Legacy
In 1950, Kostyuk completed his studies at the Leningrad School of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and worked in the organs of the Ministry until 1968. Subsequently, he served as a military instructor and director of School No. 2 in Vinnytsia.
Throughout his life, Ivan Kostyuk received numerous awards and medals, including the Order of Lenin, the Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky, and the Order of the Patriotic War. He remained a respected figure in his community until his passing.
