Biography of Andy Dufresne
Andy Dufresne, the main character of the film "The Shawshank Redemption," crawled towards his freedom through rivers of filth but managed to come out clean. He gave the system twenty years of his life, knowing all those years that his sentence was a regrettable mistake. But Andy was strong. He didn't play tough on the prison yard, he didn't bow down to authorities; he was an ordinary prisoner, reliable and rational. And at night, he walked toward his freedom, inch by inch, meter by meter, but he still found a way to correct the error committed by the judges.
The Role Offered to Tom Hanks
Initially, Tom Hanks was offered the role, but unfortunately, he was already busy filming "Forrest Gump." However, Hanks liked the script and was very interested in the role. Then, the directors offered the role to Kevin Costner, but he declined. Tim Robbins, on the other hand, agreed to take on the role, and as a result, "The Shawshank Redemption" became truly iconic, receiving numerous awards in the world of cinema and continuing to captivate audiences for two decades. It is said that Costner later regretted not playing Andy Dufresne, although it is now difficult to imagine anyone else in that role other than Tim Robbins.
Andy Dufresne's Life Before Prison
Andy Dufresne, the Vice President of a bank, had a relatively cloudless life. He had a great job, a beautiful wife, and prospects for the future. It seemed that nothing foreshadowed trouble, but little did he know that dark clouds were gathering above his head. One day, Andy learned that his wife had decided to leave him for someone else. After a terrible argument with his wife, when she had already packed her things and left, Andy got heavily drunk. He was crushed and even spent some time waiting for his wife and her lover outside their house. The next morning, the couple was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds. Andy failed to prove his innocence in court, and as a result, he was sentenced to two life imprisonments. And so, his life in the prison named Shawshank began.
Finding His Place in Prison
Despite losing hope of ever getting out, Andy found his place in prison, securing a job in the library. He also became friends with Red, played by Morgan Freeman. Soon, Andy's banking experience helped him establish a position of importance in the prison. He provided financial advice to the guards and assisted the prison warden with taxes and financial manipulations. Years passed, and Andy spent twenty years in prison. By this time, he had become indispensable to the prison warden, and he managed to improve the educational process in the prison, expanding the library and suggesting numerous innovations and improvements regarding the inmates' correctional and educational program. With Andy's active participation, Shawshank transformed from a problematic prison into an exemplary one. However, not everyone knew the extent of the corruption within those walls and how far it extended beyond the prison. Nevertheless, Andy took care of that too, as revealed later.
The Great Escape
One day, Andy Dufresne vanished from his cell. The guards could not believe their eyes – he seemed to have evaporated. Soon, details of his escape were discovered. For years, Andy had been digging a tunnel that led from his cell to the sewage system, which eventually allowed him to escape beyond the prison walls. As it turned out, all those years, Andy had been preparing for his escape. In addition to the tunnel, he had also made financial preparations by opening an account under a fake name from within the prison. Shortly after the escape, a well-dressed man visited the local banks in Portland, withdrawing over $370,000 from his accounts. Furthermore, a letter arrived at the local newspaper, describing in detail the financial manipulations of the prison authorities. Only one person realized where Andy had gone – his friend Red, with whom Andy had briefly discussed a seaside town in Mexico and a hotel he planned to build once he became free.
In the end, the friends finally reunited, and justice prevailed, but it took two long decades. Andy Dufresne, who never received justice from fate, achieved it himself. For years, while walking in the prison yard, he emptied his pockets of concrete and gravel, which he collected to slowly chip away at the walls of his cell. He swam through rivers of filth in the prison sewage system but still managed to remain clean. He triumphed, and this film tells the story of the triumph of the human spirit, of not being broken even in the face of life's most losing situations. It was Andy's willpower, strength of spirit, intelligence, and patience, along with humility and sound judgment, that helped him survive and become free.
"The Shawshank Redemption" was released in 1994 and continues to rank high on any list of the greatest films of all time. The screenplay received numerous awards, and the film is based on Stephen King's novella "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption."
