Hadia Tajik - A Trailblazing Norwegian Politician
Early Life and EducationHadia Tajik was born on May 25, 1981, in Hamar, Norway. The daughter of Steinar Trettebergstuen, a physician, and Irene Søberg, a nurse, she developed a keen interest in politics at a young age. Tajik graduated from Hamar Cathedral School in 2000 and pursued studies in political science at the University of Oslo in 2001. She later earned a degree in public administration from the Oslo University College in 2002-2003.
Political Career
Tajik's political journey began as a member of Europeisk Ungdom ("European Youth"), where she served as its county chair and later as deputy political leader. In 2002, she became the secretary of the Hedmark County branch of the Labour Youth League, and by 2004, she was its county chair. Tajik's involvement in the Labour Party continued to grow, and she became a member of its central board in 2009. Since 2019, she has led the party's women's wing.
Parliamentary Service
Tajik entered the Norwegian Parliament (Storting) in 2005, representing the Hedmark constituency. She has been re-elected four times since then, leading the party's ballot list in 2017 and 2021. Over the years, she has served on various parliamentary committees, including the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Standing Committee on Family and Culture. Tajik's parliamentary career has been marked by her advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, gender equality, and social justice.
Cabinet Position
On October 14, 2021, Tajik was appointed Minister of Culture and Gender Equality in Jonas Gahr Støre's government. In this role, she is responsible for promoting Norway's cultural heritage, supporting the arts, and advancing gender equality.
Other Notable Achievements
Beyond her political career, Tajik is also known for her literary pursuits. In 2018, she co-authored the book "Homo" with Bård Nylund, the head of the Norwegian National Association of Gay and Lesbian Rights. The book received critical acclaim and earned her the Southern Norway Literary Award. Tajik is also a member of the advisory council for the Harvey Milk Foundation, which supports the LGBTQ+ community.
Personal Life
Tajik is in a relationship with Christian Berg and is the mother of a son, Gustav, born in 2017. She is open about her lesbian identity and has been an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.
