Biography of Angel Blue
Angel Blue is an American opera soprano known for her beautiful tone and radiant and flexible upper register. She has achieved international recognition and won numerous prestigious awards, including second place at Operalia. Placido Domingo has referred to Blue as the "next Leontyne Price."
Early Life and Education
Angel Blue was born on May 3, 1984, in California. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Music from the University of Redlands in 2005, and then obtained a Master's degree in Opera Performance from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2007. Blue is also a graduate of the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, where she studied vocal and piano performance.
Career Achievements
Blue participated in the Domingo-Thornton Young Artist Program at the Los Angeles Opera from 2007 to 2009. In 2009, she was accepted into the Artistas de la Academia Placido Domingo program at the opera house in Valencia, Spain, under the guidance of Alberto Zedda, Lorin Maazel, and Zubin Mehta. That same year, Blue became a finalist in the Operalia competition, winning first place in the zarzuela category and second place in the opera category. She has also been recognized at the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Redlands Bowl Competition, and was the recipient of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion's Emerging Young Entertainers Award.
Beauty Pageants and Early Career
Standing at 180 cm tall, Blue participated in beauty pageants and worked as a model in her youth. She was the first and only African American to hold the title of "Miss Apple Valley California." Blue competed in talent competitions, often showcasing her vocal talents, including Miss Empire America 2003, Miss Hollywood 2005, Miss California 2005, Miss Southern California 2006, and Miss Nevada 2007.
Operatic and Concert Performances
Throughout her career, Angel Blue has performed leading roles and appeared as a soloist in various opera houses and concert halls. Some of her notable opera roles include Violetta in La Traviata, Musetta in La Boheme, Micaela in Carmen, the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor, Helena in A Midsummer Night's Dream, Liu in Turandot, Manon, Contessa Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro, Giulietta and Antonia in Tales of Hoffmann, Dido in Dido and Aeneas, and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni.
Blue has also performed the national anthem at events such as the Border Governors Conference hosted by former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and the California Women's Conference organized by the state's first lady, Maria Shriver.
Recent and Future Engagements
In recent seasons, Blue made her debut as Clara in Porgy and Bess at the San Francisco Opera. She has also performed as a soloist with the Valdosta Symphony in Georgia, the Korean Symphony Orchestra in Seoul and Busan, and various orchestras in Italy. She has appeared in concerts in Madrid, Budapest, and made her debut at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia.
In the 2010-2011 season, Blue frequently performed in Valencia, appeared with the American Youth Symphony and other orchestras, and graced the stage of the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. She toured with Placido Domingo, opening the Kaufmann Center in Kansas City, Missouri, and traveled to Oman, China, and Croatia. In the current season, Angel Blue has engagements with the Berlin Philharmonic, Frankfurt Opera, English National Opera, and concerts across Europe.
